WHICH ELECTRONIC APPLIANCES USE ELECTRICITY EVEN WHEN THEY ARE TURNED OFF?

Most people have adopted the habit of turning off lights and appliances when not in use in an effort to save energy. This is a great idea; leaving appliances ON unnecessarily wastes electricity and increases your electricity bill. None wants to pay higher electricity bills even after being so much cautious the whole day and night.

It may not always be enough to turn off appliances. Even after the power is turned off, many modern appliances continue to draw electricity. You will have to check all the appliances one by one in order to see whether they are unplugged or not. This feels to be so annoying but it's worth practising rather than paying higher bills.

Some of the worst offenders are these six appliances:

  1. Television.

Using a LED television will consume significantly less electricity than an older model. However, modern TVs continue to consume electricity even when switched off. That sounds ridiculous as you have spent money to buy the latest technology but are still unsure whether to save on the electricity bill or wasting energy. Make sure to make a habit to unplug them to prevent electricity from flowing.

  1. Computers.

You may be wasting a significant amount of electricity if you leave your computer or laptop plugged in overnight. Even when it’s off, that power cord will continue to draw energy. That means you cannot only shut down your computer after working, you always need to unplug it carefully to conserve energy.

  1. Mobile Phones.

A similar mistake is leaving your phone plugged in overnight to charge. This is what most of us do on daily basis. The reason behind this is we are unaware of the fact that in spite of its full power, a mobile phone continues to draw power and increase your electricity bill. We always need to unplug it after the phone is fully charged.

  1. Stereos.

Most music lovers are ignorant of the fact that even when not in use, stereo equipment draws electricity while plugged in. Making a habit of unplugging the stereo system after use is the best thing to do.

  1. Microwaves and Coffee Makers.

It is true that these kitchen appliances do not draw a lot of electricity, but even when they are not being used, the digital display consumes electricity.

  1. Traditional Lamps

Even if the lights are off, your plugged-in lamp is drawing electricity. So keep them unplugged before going to sleep.

You can make a valuable saving on your electricity bill by doing the above little effortless things.

How to avoid high Electricity Bill in Summers | Guidelines

Following are some of the ways that can help you in summer:

Find out Energy Leaks at your home

Make it a habit that when you leave a room, turn off all the lights and fan. This practice must accompany by unplugging all the electronics that are not being used such as mobile and laptop chargers, TV and other small appliances. Normally it has been observed that people don’t bother to turn off these small appliances which in the end results in higher electricity bills and causes frustration. This is what we can call Energy Leaks. If you succeed to prevent these energy leaks, it will certainly help you reduce your electricity bill easily.

Fixing old and rusty electrical wiring

Have a look at the electrical wiring at your home. If it looks old and rusty, try to fix it. A lot of times we get careless about mending old wires or repairing corroded sockets. These small-looking things can also cause an increase in the electricity bill. Fixing these types of leaks with the help of an electrician can help you save on your electricity bills.

Controlling Electricity Usage during Peak Hours

In Pakistan, the peak hours of electricity are between 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. So, don’t use heavy-duty appliances like AC, washing machine, iron, water pump etc. which consume a lot of energy during these hours. Managing electricity usage during peak hours will result in a lower electricity bill.

Upgrading to Inverter Air Conditioners

An inverter air conditioner consumes between 40 and 60% less energy than a conventional air conditioner. Inverter ACs, however, cost more than normal ACs in the Pakistani market. Summer is when you can save money on your electricity bills by upgrading to such energy-saving appliances.

For those without inverter AC, you should set your thermostat at a comfortable temperature so that your units won't have to work too hard. Setting the thermostat between 24 and 26 degrees, Celsius is ideal.

Replace Normal Lights with LEDs

Another trick to save energy is replacing normal lights with energy-efficient LEDs. Compared to a normal bulb, LED bulbs consume less energy, and they make your room brighter. If you replace the regular lights in your home with LEDs, you'll save a lot of money.

Use Blinds and Curtains to Block the Sunlight

In order to prevent your home from overheating, you should use blinds and curtains. When the sun shines straight into your home and heats it up, close the curtains or close the blinds. As a result, your AC will cool your room more quickly.

How To Reduce Your Electricity Bill in Summer

Due to the scorching summer heat, air conditioners and coolers are used more often, resulting in higher electricity bills. We run these machines around the clock during the intolerable heat waves since we heavily rely on them for our daily lives. Air conditioning units can be very expensive if they are used for long periods of time. Is there anything you can do to make sure you don't blow your budget on your electricity bill?

This blog is about minimizing the effects of summer heat and reducing electricity bills

How can you do it? Some important tips-

Which are the best ways to save electricity? ” and “What are the ways to save electricity during summer?” are among the most frequently asked questions during summer.

The following five tips will help you save money on your electricity bill this year.

  • Consider painting your roof white

paint on the roof can keep your house cool and can reduce electricity bills

As the summer months approach, Pakistan experiences unwarranted load shedding. Getting your roof painted white is the easiest way to cope with scorching heat. By reflecting sunlight, your roof cools down your home's interior. If your roof is coated with black tar, it will appear as if it is baking. As a result, more heat is generated internally.

For a house with a roof that receives direct sunlight, you will have to run the air conditioner longer in order to achieve the desired temperature. According to studies, white paint reduces heat and reflects about 90% of sunlight, keeping indoor and outdoor temperatures equal. As a result, you may not need to use an air conditioner in your room. Your home will gradually become cooler as a result.

  • Unused devices should be unplugged

Turning off devices that are not in use can also help reduce the electricity bill in summer. Make sure you unplug your TV as well as switch it off. Whenever you use a charger, electronic device, computer or appliance, you should unplug it afterwards. Even though this information is widely known, it is not widely practised. The main reason, apart from laziness, is that unplugging devices does not save much - merely around PKR 100 to PKR 500. It's like paying for something you didn't even use. We should keep in mind that we have limited resources, even if we can afford to pay the extra amount.

  • Scan Devices that consume more energy

If people live in the same house for a long time, they are likely to neglect to repair rusted sockets and fix old wires. Despite their small size, these electrical items consume a lot of energy. Fix the leaks in your home to increase its energy efficiency. By using this process, you will be able to reduce your electricity bills and save money.

  • Off-Peak Hours are best to use appliances

Make sure to iron your clothes during off-peak hours

On your electricity meter, there are two types of electricity unit readings. These are Off-peak hours & Peak hours readings. You should try to take advantage of the off-peak hours when the meter functions at a normal pace and electricity charges are minimum. You should always try to use appliances that consume more electricity, such as the washing machine, iron or water pump, during these hours. Also, charge your devices during this period.

  • Invest in Inverter Air Conditioners

Choosing an air conditioner wisely is important. Choosing the right machine for your room is crucial. There is a common misconception that a big AC will cool the room faster. You will save money on your electricity bill if you choose the right-sized AC for your room. Buildings in Pakistan are generally not insulated. Moreover, summer lasts for more than half of the year. Therefore, you will save money by buying the right air conditioner. Make sure you thoroughly research the brand and size before making a purchase.

  • High Electricity consumption machines vs Low electricity consumption machines

Generally, Front-load washing machines consume less electricity

Some appliances consume more electricity than their coequals. For example, laptops consume almost half of the electricity compared to desktop computers. For this good reason, people prefer to use laptops because of their low consumption of electricity. Likewise, it is believed that front-end washing machines are more energy efficient as compared to top-load washing machines.

The Way Forward

Apart from the above tips to reduce electricity bills, there is another option for you and that is GO FOR SOLAR. Instaling solar panels on your roof is the best way to save electricity consumption. Although it is a huge investment, it repays the whole amount in 3-4 years. It is in fact the best way to cope with high electricity bills and electricity outages. People all around the world are turning to this way.

How to avoid high electricity bills in the summer in Pakistan

Pakistan's energy crisis has been exacerbated by the demand for electricity from the residential sector. Typical middle-class households with five to six members have the following appliances: refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, laptops, and air conditioners. High electricity bills always shock consumers every summer. In fact it's really difficult to get rid of those bills quickly.

6 Important Tips

Here we are giving you some useful tips to avoid 5-6 months of heat and shock.

  1. Replace inefficient home appliances with the latest ones

The inefficiency of home appliances results in a shocking 25% loss of electricity. The power consumption of refrigerators that are over 20 years old is 50% higher than those

that are more recent. Further, overfilling, neglecting refrigerator maintenance, storing hot items and keeping the door open for a long time overburdens the fridge. The latest energy-saving fridges should be placed in well-ventilated and warm areas, the condenser coils should be cleaned regularly, and the temperature should remain between 34 and 38 degrees Celsius.

  1. Replace old bulbs with the latest LED bulb

The most effective way to slow down the meter is to replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). In comparison to regular bulbs which waste 99% of electricity, CFL bulbs last longer and are 10% more efficient. Thus, old bulbs emit only 1% light energy and waste the rest in the form of heat.

  1. Use only inverter Air Conditioners

Pakistan's scorching summers demand continuous use of air conditioners, which account for 60% of the bill. It takes just three months for an inverter to pay for itself since it lowers electricity bills by 35%. Moreover, regular maintenance ensures a steady flow of air so the air-conditioner doesn't overwork.

  1. Discard old TV and start using LED TV

Discarding old-fashioned TV and using LED is a must-go option as it does nooot only makes a favourable impact n your electricity bill but its hues are very catchy and pleasant to the eyes .

  1. Use home appliances in off-peak hours

In one study, Home Energy found that only 6% of the electricity a washing machine uses is for washing and 81% goes for drying. In this case, clothes should ideally be washed in cold water or in naturally hot water between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., and then air-dried

  1. Replace CRT Monitors with LCD or LED

It has been estimated that desktop computers consume 80% more electricity than laptops, and gaming PCs require three times as much electricity as a refrigerator. Using LCD monitors, adjusting their brightness, and limiting the use of gaming consoles could help households and workplaces save 30% of their monthly bills.

Consumers are required to look for intermediate solutions like conservation since government-led supply-side initiatives are long-term. There is no need to impose a blackout in the house or sweat out in the heat. Pakistan's energy needs can be reduced by 18% by using household appliances smartly, which would result in two fewer hours of load-shedding each day.
